This is the first of several tutorials about setting up an online radio station. This article will cover equipment needed. My name is Christos Kioni and I am writing from personal experience as an online broadcaster. If you are serious about online broadcasting, growing a loyal audience and the station paying for itself, invest in the right equipment up front. You will need the following hardware for professional internet broadcasting.
1. Two Dedicated computers. One for live streaming. One for production. • 80 gigabyte hard drives minimum • 1 gigabyte of ram each • Pentium 4 hyper-threaded processors. The higher the better. • External 80 gigabyte hard drive for backup storage 2. Two M-Audio Delta 44 Professional 4-In/Out Audio Cards 3. Stereo Mixer – I use a Peavey RQ200 but upgrading to a Behringer UB1832 FX Pro 4. Professional Condenser Microphone. I use a Behringer B2-Pro 5. Audio Sound Processors(s) • Behringer Ultramizer Pro DSP 1400P 24-bit Dual Engine Digital Multiband Loudness Maximizer Program Enhancer • Behringer Composer Pro MDX 2600 Audio Interactive Dynamic Processor • Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC 2200 High Precision Tube Mic/Line Preamp 6. Microphone boom 7. Microphone Pop Filter 8. Studio Monitors (mid priced computer speakers with subwoofer) your computers may come with desktop speakers which are adequate for monitoring. 9. Headphones Optional Equipment • Microphone boom • Rack mounts You may notice I am a fan of Behringer professional audio equipment. Some broadcasters insist you invest in high end equipment; however my experience with the Behringer brand is positive. The price is mid range and the quality of the equipment is comparable to many high end brands. I purchased my Behringer equipment from zzounds.com and on eBay. I am currently using two HP Compaq Presarios with the above specs. However my processors are Intel Celerons and not the Pentiums I mentioned above. You can cut some cost going with a slower processor if you know the power requirements of the software you will use for broadcasting and production work. Christos Kioni http://PositiveVibesRadio.net

Setup station
The forum has the list on what is required for broadcasting and I have a Sony Vaio with 2 80gb hard drives built in, is that acceptable rather than having 2 computers?

Having 2 pcs is always better then one when it comes to broadcasting,
one is dedicated for streaming, the other dedicated for surfing, email, etc.... I always say the more power the less hassle you will have broadcasting, not to mention having a good cable/dsl provider with plenty upload speed, no less then 256k upload. |
